Around 7:30 a.m. Monday morning, a 13-year-old girl was riding her bike just in front of Diamond Elementary School when she was struck by a box truck.
Watch commander Jeffrey Smith with the Santa Ana Police Department stated that young girl, who was identified as Priscilla Vallejo, was riding through the intersection of Center Street and Edinger Avenue. According to the Coroner Department, Priscilla was only four days short of her 14th birthday. She was pronounced dead at 7:42 a.m.
Witnesses stated that a bicycle could be seen lodged beneath the unmarked box truck. Investigators continued at the scene of the collision for hours to understand the cause of the accident. The identity of the truck driver was not released. According to officials, but he was an employee of the Santa Ana Unified School District. Police reported that he was cooperative but very distraught over the accident.
Santa Ana Unified School District Deputy Superintendent Dr. Stefanie Phillips made a statement about the tragic accident, stating that district’s top priority is the safety of it’s students. She continued with saying, ” Santa Ana Police Department is investigating the collision. We continue to cooperate fully with the Santa Ana Police Department.”
