Avenal, CA — On Monday, March 17, 2014, there was a major collision between two 18-wheeler trucks and a minivan along I-5 freeway. Police said that 30-year old women named Maricela Briseno and a 6-year old girl were killed in the wreck and another three people were injured.
The parties were identified as Alfredo Guzman, 32, Julia Guzman, 7, Maria Guzman, 53, and Jubenal Guzman, 34. CHP troopers said that the Guzman’s minivan blew out a tire and was hit by two 18-wheeler trucks on the I-5 in Avenal.
Alfredo was driving the minivan south on I-5 near Avenel Cutoff Road this past Monday afternoon when a rear tire blew out.
The minivan lost control and swerved across the minivan, landing in the northbound lanes. Two northbound 18-wheeler trucks crashed into the minivan, killing Maricela Briseno and a 6-year old girl, who were passengers in the smaller vehicle.
Alfredo, Maria, and Julia were all taken to hospitals with varying injuries. A fifth person in the minivan, Jubenal Guzman, 43, wasn’t injured at all. The CHP is still investigating what caused the tire on the minivan to fail.
