Pedestrian accidents can happen in various different ways, whether it is during a daily run, crossing a crosswalk or unmarked street, or by simply walking on a sidewalk. More often than not, pedestrian accidents happen suddenly and unexpectedly. Unfortunately, pedestrian accidents often result in severe injuries or wrongful death.
A 51-year-old woman died on the night of September 27th after she was struck by a driver before she could cross the street, officials said.
Tustin police responded shortly before 8:40 p.m. to a crash near First Street and Yorba Lane.
Karen Portillo, 51 of Santa Ana, was walking southbound on First Street when she entered Yorba Lane to cross to the other side, police Lt. Bob Wright said.
Officials said at the same time, a 56-year-old woman was driving through the intersection in a Ford Flex and accidentally struck her.
Portillo was taken to Orange County Global Medical Center in Santa Ana where she died from her injuries at 9:28 p.m., according to the coroner’s office.
The driver stopped at the scene, cooperated with officers and was not intoxicated at the time of the crash, Wright said.
