A 24-year-old Downey man driving a BMW was killed early Sunday after driving southbound in the northbound lanes of the 5 Freeway near Ortega Highway, California Highway Patrol officials said.
The crash there followed reports starting at 1:44 a.m. when the BMW was first spotted driving south in the northbound lanes of the 405 freeway and Sand Canyon Road in Irvine, according to a statement from CHP Officer Jose Lopez.
The BMW continued driving south in the wrong direction and onto the 5 freeway where he collided with a Toyota Camry between Avery Parkway and Ortega Highway.
CHP officers from Santa Ana and San Juan Capistrano came to the scene. The driver of the BMW was dead and the driver and passenger of the Toyota were taken to Mission Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Lopez wrote.
The coroner identified the driver of the BMW as Brian Bobadilla, 24, of Downey.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
