Several studies published in respected medical journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine have concluded that SSRI use during pregnancy significantly increases risk for birth defects. The FDA issued its first public health advisory warning about the risks of taking Paxil during pregnancy, particularly during the first trimester, in 2005. In 2006, it issued a second public health advisory suggesting that SSRI medication during the second half of a pregnancy may be linked to a much greater risk of infants being born with persistent pulmonary hypertension.
