A woman suspected of being under the influence of drugs was arrested Friday after she drove her SUV onto a Costa Mesa sidewalk, killing a man, police said.
Anna Marie McPherson, 45, of Irvine, was driving with two children southbound in the 1900 block of Newport Boulevard in a Mercedes SUV, Costa Mesa police Lt. Victor M. Bakkila, said in a statement.
The car went off the street near Ford Road and drove up on the sidewalk, where it struck two light poles, an electrical box, a bus bench and a tree, before hitting a 64-year-old Costa Mesa man walking on the sidewalk, Bakkila said.
The man was taken to Orange County Global Medical Center in Santa Ana, where he died. His name has not been released pending notificaiton of his family.
McPherson and the children in her vehicle were uninjured. She was arrested for gross vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence of drugs, causing injury.
